gay therapist with urban background in denver offering therapy for eating disorders and body image, LGBTQ+ counseling, grief counseling, therapy for religious trauma, and psychedelic therapy

Zach Verwey, MA, LPC, NCC

Although I initially studied Hospitality and Tourism Management in college, I quickly realized upon graduation that my true passion involved meeting others with empathy and compassion, hearing their stories, and sitting with them in seasons of pain and darkness. This passion led me to trade in the Great Lakes of Michigan for the Rocky Mountains of Denver in early 2012.

After moving to Denver, I completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary’s CACREP accredited program,* and I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado.

I began my counseling practice in 2015, seeing a few clients individually while I gained experience in community mental health, eating disorder clinics, start-ups, and the nonprofit sector. In 2022, I started seeing clients in private practice full-time. I work largely with LGBTQ+ individuals, and specialize in religious trauma and spirituality, eating disorders and body image, relationship issues, and grief and loss. I recently became certified as a Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Provider to provide ketamine-assisted therapy, and I hold a certification in Prepare/Enrich’s relationship work.

When it comes to therapy, I believe deeply in the power of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship work in the therapeutic process, and I offer a holistic and integrative approach that honors the mind, body, and spirit. I believe psychotherapy is best described as an interactive and collaborative journey the client and therapist embark on together with the goal of improved mental heath, deeper connections and an increased sense of well-being. My laugh has been called everything from "bright and infectious" to a "cackle," but I have never stopped appreciating the use of well-timed humor in life and in therapy, and it is likely to be used in a session or two :)

When I’m not sitting with clients, I enjoy reading the memoirs of comedians who also happen to be women, exploring Denver’s latest hot spots, and kicking back with my 12 year old cat, Lydia.
